A NEW WEBSITE: A NEW COLLECTION NAME
From history and architecture to contemporary watchmaking

Valbray’s patented shutter system, 16 ultra-thin sliding blades that disappear completely under a manually rotatable bezel, always maintains a circular opening. This constantly round aperture of the shutter, unique in the world of watchmaking, has sparked many potential names for the mechanism. The one that prevailed in this unconventional competition is “Oculus”.
In Latin, “oculus” means “eye”. The shutter mechanism has been often compared to the iris of an eye; therefore, the concept was not new to Valbray. Eyes are cross-cultural symbols of focus, clarity, vision and perception. In architecture, an oculus is a circular window usually found on ceilings and walls of buildings.
The oculus is a feature of Classical Architecture since the 16th century, but one of the first and possibly the most famous appearance of the name is as the circular opening on the dome of Pantheon in Rome, a temple consecrated to All the Gods of Ancient Rome. The oculus symbolizes a “path” to the arched vault of heavens, far and above common men and a link to the sun, one of the elements attributed to divine power since ancient times.
But, more than anything else, the oculus reminds us of the power and equilibrium of the circle, a shape indicating perfection, timelessness and harmony, frequently used as a creative motif in the Valbray’s creations.
Finding its significations alluring, Valbray decided to rename its current collections in: Oculus V.01 Chrono Collection and Oculus V.02 Grand Date Collection, with the next ones to follow. Valbray couples the history with its own contemporary and conceptual style and rejuvenates a classical symbol through its trademark audacious spirit.
In an equivalent spirit, the new website’s homepage has been inspired by a wall mosaic, one of the main decoration methods used in classic architecture; it presents a high interactivity and updated content from all areas of the brand universe, subdivided by different color: the product, the events, the brand community, the brand communication. The last article becomes one of the stones of the mosaic, and the brand’s history is etched piece after piece and forever on the wall.
With its main color combination, on a black and white base, the website brings together a contemporary esthetic and wall logic, with a classical refinement, highlighting the brand’s uniqueness. The new Valbray’s website is the unique combination of watchmaking elegance with interactive and entertaining technology to create a new way to experience time.
