Highly valued for thousands of years, top quality emeralds have long been sought after by indian mughal emperors and maharajas and by european royalty and aristocrats. many of the best emeralds rumored to have come from india were actually discovered in colombia by the Spanish during the sixteenth century and came to india by way of trade routes. the gem most closely prized by the royal families of india, emeralds were held in high regard by mughal rulers as symbols of power and wealth, as well as for their mystical powers. the largest and finest emeralds were reserved for royalty; these stones, known as old mine emeralds, antique stones maintaining their original cuts, have long been valued for their beauty and exquisite deep green color. Stones of this quality and color are rarely seen on the market today.
