de SOJH® - Expositions

Cuervo y Sobrinos announces the release of a new and exciting watch, the Espléndidos Misterio. The “Mystery” refers to the unusual means of imparting the time that seduces eyes with a spellbinding display. The new model perfectly demonstrates, once again, the refreshing creativity that has become synonymous with the Cuervo y Sobrinos name. The Misterio captures the passion and style of Cuba but harnesses Swiss watchmaking prowess to create an intoxicating cocktail that is difficult to resist.

Cuba, a source of inspiration

Cuba exhibits an exotic character. Smells, tastes, sights and sounds overwhelm the senses with a profusion of excitement. Mariposa flowers, local cuisine, infused with cumin and oregano, and fine Havana cigars all grant appeal. The island is imbued with a vibrant tapestry of cultural influences from Africa, China, France, Portugal and, most notably, Spain.

The seductive sounds of Mambo and Cuban Salsa entice hips to gyrate to a heady beat. Bata Cubana adorned with flamboyant frills, accentuate animated limbs in a spell-binding spectacle brimming with emotion and excitement.

Cuba is the ancestral home of Cuervo y Sobrinos and its influence can be seen in the models which carry the brand’s nomen. The glamour of the Art Deco period and La Belle Époque are still evident in today’s Cuba and provide a rich source of inspiration to the Cuervo y Sobrinos design team.

A new model, with a secret to share

Misterio is an exciting new timepiece which joins the successful Espléndidos family of models. It marks a landmark in the history of Cuervo y Sobrinos, with a design that is inspired and truly breathtaking.

Misterio, like a latin beauty with sultry brown eyes, only reveals its secrets with increased familiarity.

The rectangular shaped dial, presented in a choice of cream or black, resembles no other timepiece before. An open-worked disc, comprised of concentric circles, bestows intrigue, coquettishly enticing eyes to look closely. Three apertures, punctuating the disc, reveal the prevailing hour on the dial surface beneath.

Spanning the open-worked disc are three bright red hands which collaborate together to communicate the minutes. A central seconds hand is located centre stage of the dial and a date display features at 6 o’clock.

A beautiful body

The stainless steel case measures 35 mm x 46 mm. It is imbued with sensuality, courtesy of its arcing case band which seamlessly extends into the lugs with a comely curving line.

A sapphire crystal with antireflective coating mitigates glare and ensures the full charm of the dial can be appreciated.

The crown is neat, hugging the case band of the watch, discreet in character but easy to operate owing to its knurled detailing. Decorating the side of the crown is the CyS emblem.

An alluring screwed case back features an engraving. It depicts the safe door, originally found in “La Casa”, the prestigious boutique on Havana’s prestigious Fifth Avenue back in 1882. Incidentally, the safe can now be seen in the Havana Shop-Museum, El Reloj Cuervo y Sobrinos in central Calle Muralla, close to the firm’s former head office in Cuba.

Completing the impressive specification of the Espléndidos Misterio is a luxurious Louisiana alligator strap complemented with a stainless steel folding buckle, engraved with the CyS emblem.

However, the beauty of this watch is more than skin deep.

Swiss watchmaking know-how, reliability assured

Beating at the heart of the Espléndidos Misterio is a fine Swiss movement. The CYS 5102 (base ETA 2892-A2) has a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz), contains 21 jewels and has a power reserve of 42 hours.

The oscillating mass features a fan decoration to its form and the CyS emblem.

Located at Capolago in a 19th century villa, “La Casa”, overlooking Lake Lugano, the company designs and assembles its stylish timepieces which successfully capture the latin spirit and harness Swiss watchmaking know-how.

Glamour with a latin flavour

The ultimate expression of luxury and glamour is delivered with a haute joaillerie version of the Misterio with 539 pavé diamonds adorning its case, totalling 3.138 carats.

Optimally sized and resplendently presented, the diamond set case stands testament to the adroit skill of the gem-setter’s time-served hands with incredible craftsmanship ubiquitously presented .

A new watch, a new era

Cuervo y Sobrinos continues to show growth in all markets, especially Asia and the Middle East. A perfect illustration of the company’s Asian expansion includes the recent opening of a “shop in shop” in the European Watches Palace in Beijing.

With new distributors in China and the United States, the company is justifiably optimistic about the future, marked with an array of new models including the Espléndidos Misterio, a Latin mystery with Swiss certainty.

Quote from Marzio Villa, President and owner of Cuervo y Sobrinos

“The Espléndidos Misterio is an exciting novelty and marks a new chapter in our company’s history. It brings something new to the market with its ingenious display, but remains faithful to our design codes and is instantly recognisable as a Cuervo y Sobrinos watch.

Our brand continues to go from strength to strength with its successful strategy of blending Cuban passion with Swiss watchmaking craft while drawing on the glamour of the Art Deco period and La Belle Époque.

We have seen much growth, especially in the Middle East and Asia, and look forward to building on the exciting new relationships we have formed in China and the US.

I am very proud of the work our team has done in creating this timepiece and helping our company continue to flourish.”

About Cuervo y Sobrinos

The name Cuervo y Sobrinos originates in Cuba, the ancestral home of the brand. It was formed in 1882 by Ramòn Cuervo and his nephews, hence the naming of the company, “Sobrinos”, the Spanish word for nephews.

Cuba and, in particular, Havana in the late 19th century, attracted luminaries from academia, commerce and high-society. In the 1930s the Caribbean island, enticed literati, musicians and artists to its attractive shores.

An exotic pearl, nestling in the Caribbean Sea, it attracted Caruso, Gable, Hemingway and Churchill to enjoy its exotic character and warm, sultry climes. Moreover, these famous names were known to patronise “La Casa", the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique on Avenida Quinta.

Today, Cuervo y Sobrinos is based in Capolago in Switzerland. However, whilst its timepieces oscillate to the regular frequency of 4 Hertz, there is a very different Caribbean beat evidenced with the emotive styling of its handsome watches.

Cuba in the 1940s and 50s was synonymous with glamour and a latin rhythm which conferred a zest for life. The historical allure of the land may be resigned to a bygone era, but “Tiempo lento” still remains an appealing philosophy to this day.

Life is for living. Each moment should be savoured. These are the values at the heart of Cuervo y Sobrinos and are evident with the charismatic watches which attract admirers from around the globe.
