Winning team Oxford gets awarded JEANRICHARD Aquascope after renowned Boat Race
For the second year in a row, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer JEANRICHARD
served as the Official Timekeeper and Timepiece of the 160th Oxford and
Cambridge BNY Mellon Boat Race when the University Boat Clubs faced each other
on the Thames on Sunday 6 April 2014 in a thrilling challenge. This partnership is
rooted in common values, like team spirit, endurance, passion, and a particular
Philosophy of Life. The 2014 winning team Oxford University Boat Club was
awarded the limited edition JEANRICHARD Aquascope watch following their
stunning performance on the 6.8-kilometre stretch on the Thames River and
deciding the race in 18 minutes and 36 seconds in their favour. The 78th victory of
Oxford was followed by over 17 million spectators in the UK and abroad.
At a special reception held by JEANRICHARD on the banks of the river, personalities from the worlds of entertainment, sports, the economy and media followed the BNY Mellon Boat Race challenge to the second with the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer. JEANRICHARD was ensuring the quality and precision of the timing during the competition as well as providing the winning team with a limited edition timepiece. The Boat Race is broadcasted internationally to over 200 countries with over 7.5 million viewers tuning in only on BBC and over 17 million worldwide, while about 250 000 spectators were watching the race live along the Thames.
This partnership, entered into under the aegis of the JEANRICHARD’s Aquascope collection, is based on the common values of team spirit, endurance, passionate commitment and a particular Philosophy of Life. It generated also an exclusive timepiece: a new Aquascope model designed in the race’s traditional colours, with a minute-circle and double hour-marker at 12 o’clock reproducing the two shades of blue corresponding to the two teams (Dark Blue for Oxford, Light Blue for Cambridge), a blue rubber strap with a finely-ribbed surface, and a seconds hand adorned with an arrow referring to the logo of the Race.
Available from April 2014 at authorised JEANRICHARD sales outlets, this Aquascope “Boat Race” model with its self-winding movement is produced in a limited series of 160 watches, as a tribute to The 2014 BNY Mellon Boat Race, which was the 160th to be held.
ABOUT THE OXFORD CAMBRIDGE BOAT RACE
The Oxford Cambridge Boat Race was founded in 1829 by two friends and students at the
respective universities. It has risen to become one of the oldest sports events in the world
– and one of the most revered traditions in Great Britain. It has been held annually since
1856, with an exception during the two World Wars. Nowadays it attracts over 250,000
spectators on site and is watched by about 7.5 million BBC television viewers. And that
does not include the international viewership from the broadcasting in over 200 countries
throughout the world.
The Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race – known as The BNY Mellon Boat Race after its main
sponsor – is played out on a 6.8-kilometre stretch on the Thames River between Putney
and Mortlake to the west of the centre of London. It requires outstanding athletic form and
great commitment from the participants. The crews are selected from students at the two
universities. They train intensely for over six months, while at the same time pursuing their
studies full time. Tradition has it that the loser of the previous year’s event has to go to the
winner to throw down the gauntlet.
