On May 19, 1919 New York based hotelier, Raymond Orteig, extended a challenge and $25,000 prize purse to the first pilot to fly non-stop between Paris and New York. Numerous notable and well-financed pilots attempted the challenge. It wasn’t until an unknown US Air Mail pilot entered the race, largely self-financed from his own savings and meager wages, that history was made. Charles Lindbergh completed the 5,800km venture, solo, and inspired a new era in aviation and exploration.
